“psychofreak” is the third track on Camila Cabello’s latest album “Familia” and features American singer-songwriter WILLOW. The trip hop and dark pop song sees Cabello take a new turn sonically to discuss anxiety and mental health struggles. This song also marks both singers first musical collaboration together.
In the song, Cabello and WILLOW detail physical and emotional aspects of their anxieties and it makes them feel anything but normal, and like a “psychofreak” at times in their life. Cabello opened up to ELLE México about the song, revealing it was the song closest to her heart on the album:
“[…] I talk a lot about my anxiety about relationships, about the struggle to try to be present despite feeling paranoid or insecure. At that time, I was with a person who loved me, but I was afraid and ashamed of being afraid. It was difficult to talk about it because at that time I didn’t talk much about my anxiety…”
The music video for “psychofreak” was uploaded to Cabello’s YouTube channel on the 8th April 2022 and was directed by Charlotte Rutherford. The video shows both Cabello and WILLOW in a dark waiting room, with the room spinning round as both singers walk on walls and ceilings. As of the 23rd April 2022, the video had a total of 9.6 million views and 318 thousand likes.
