Story of Song
This song is about loneliness. Cliff Richard is describing how harsh loneliness can be on a person “Love can’t you see I’m alone, can’t you give this fool a chance” he’s talking to love asking for a lover. He can’t seem to find a girl to fall in love with and enjoy that experience and everything that comes with it, missing the person he loves, as signalled by the lyric “And little love is all I ask, a little sadness when you go”.
He’s not asking for a friend, he wants to fall so much in love and feel like he wants to fly: “I wanna spread my wings but I just can’t fly, As a string of pearls, the string of girls go sailin’ by” although he passes by a lot of girls all the time.
He continues to describe how lonely he is probably lying on a bed staring at the ceiling. Perhaps the word “sailed” is used because it fits with the title of the song “I have sailed a million ceilings, Solitary room.”.
In the beginning of the 80s, Richard changed his name from Harry Webb to Cliff Richard and received the O.B.E. (Order of the British Empire) from the Queen for his services to the music industry and charity work.
The 1980s was a comeback for Richard as he released hits that also reached number 1 on the charts.
