“it’s time to go” is one out of the two bonus tracks released from Taylor Swift’s deluxe edition of her latest studio album “evermore”, which was released on the 11th December 2020 through Republic Records. “it’s time to go” was released on the 7th January 2021, alongside another bonus track titled “right where you left me”.
Written by Swift, collaborator and producer Aaron Dessner, Swift stated on Instagram that the song was “about listening to your gut when it tells you to leave”. The song details tales of untrust, betrayal and breakups, with Swift reiterating the importance of knowing when to leave a toxic relationship, friendship or workplace. Many of Swift’s fan’s believe that the third verse of the song is a reference to her public legal battle with her former label, Big Machine Records, who refused to give the Swift the ownership rights to the masters of her first six studio albums. The verse goes as follows:
“Fifteen years, fifteen million tears
Begging ’til my knees bled
I gave it my all, he gave me nothing at all
Then wondered why I left
Now he sits on his throne in his palace of bones
Praying to his greed
He’s got my past frozen behind glass
But I’ve got me”
The lyric video for “it’s time to go” was uploaded to Swift’s YouTube channel on the 7th January 2021. The video currently has almost 3 million views and 181 thousand likes.
