“Hit Different” is the 2020 single from American singer and songwriter SZA featuring vocals from American rapper Ty Dolla $ign. The track was released September 2020 through Top Dawg Records and RCA Records, and was written by SZA, Chad Hugo, Pharrell Williams, Rob Bisel and Ty Dolla $ign – with production done by The Neptunes.
“Hit Different” is a contemporary R&B song, rumoured to be about her hostile relationship with her label Top Dawg, or just a hostile relationship that cannot help but draw SZA back in. The song came less than a month after she openly tweeted about the label delaying her new music on purpose, leading to SZA creating the hashtag #FreeSZA on Twitter. Speaking to Zane Lowe from Apple Music, SZA explained how the song was recorded at DJ Khaled’s house, as well as her thoughts around releasing new music after a period of rest:
“I just wanted to give people something just to vibe because I have so much stuff that I’m just done holding onto… I was crying with [my] mom because I haven’t dropped anything in so long and I just feel like the anxiety…Sometimes I’m strong enough to just drop something and then two weeks passes, and then I’m not strong anymore.”
The music video for “Hit Different” was directed by SZA (which marks her directorial debut) and premiered on YouTube on the 4th September 2020 on SZA’s channel. The video shows SZA dancing in different outfits in different locations, such as in a barn filled with animals, in an empty field, top of a haystack, and on top of a car performing choreography with back up dancers. However, there is also the occasional flash of SZA covered in blood, with Ty Dolla $ign also making an appearance in the song. The second half of the video is the video for “Good Days”. As of mid-January 2021, the video has 49.2 million views and 741 thousand likes.
