“happiness” is the seventh track from American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Taylor Swift and her ninth studio album titled “evermore”, which was released in December 2020 through Republic Records. “happiness” was written by Swift and frequent collaborator Aaron Dessner, who produced a total of 17 out of the 18 tracks on the “evermore” album.
“happiness” is a slow post-breakup ballad about not seeing a past relationship through rose-coloured glasses and reminiscing both the good and bad aspects of their love. Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine shortly after the release of “evermore”, producer and writer Dessner spoke about the track:
Claire Shaffer: Taylor has mentioned that you recorded “Happiness” just a week before the album was released. Was that something you guys wrote, recorded, and produced all at the last minute, or was it something you’d been sitting on for a while before you finally cracked the code?
Aaron Dessner: There were two songs like that. One is a bonus track called “Right Where You Left Me,” and the other one was “Happiness,” which she wrote literally days before we were supposed to master… the music for “Happiness” is something that I had been working on since last year. I had sang a little bit on it, too — I thought it was a Big Red Machine song, but then she loved the instrumental and ended up writing to it.”
There is currently no music video for “happiness”, but an official lyric video that is available via Taylor Swift’s YouTube channel. Uploaded on the 11th December 2020, the lyric video has a total of 3 million views and almost a quarter of a million likes.
