“Boyfriend” is the latest single from American singer-songwriter and actress Selena Gomez and the deluxe edition of her 2020 album, “Rare”. The song is written by Gomez, fellow singer-songwriter Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Jon Wienner and Sam Homaee with production done by The Roommates.
In an interview with Apple Music about “Boyfriend”, Julia Michaels revealed that the idea for the song came from a text message that Gomez had sent to both Michaels and Tranter. Gomez stated: “I can say this message specifically, because again, when I want to do more, it is sometimes like, ‘You know what? Today I just don’t know what I’m actually feeling, so maybe it’s not going to be anything… But I text[ed] her (Julia Michaels), I said, ‘Well, it’s like I feel like I’ve covered everything on the album. I was like, I don’t know. Life’s good. I want a boyfriend. That’s about it.’ And she’s like, ‘LOL, whatever. And I come in the studio and that’s literally the title.'” Tranter also emphasized: “The text message said ‘I want,’ not ‘need,’… Very important words. And so we made sure to make that very clear because no one needs a f—ing boyfriend. You can want one. But no one needs one.”
The music video was released on the 10th April 2020, and was directed by Matty Peacock. The video shows Gomez driving in a convertible with frogs in a cage in the boot of her car, while she goes on to collect a potion that turns men into frogs when they drink it. Using this potion, Gomez goes on various dates and turns three different men into frogs, ultimately driving away into the night. In only one week, the video has 21.5 million views with almost 1 million likes.
