“Rare” is the opening track from same titled third studio album from American singer, Selena Gomez. The album was released on the 10th January 2020, and has been over four years in the making, according to Gomez.
“Rare” is written by Gomez, Simon Rosen, Madison Love, Brett McLaughin and Nolan Lambroza, with production done by Simon Says and Sir Nolan. The track details a journey of self-empowerment and self-love. Gomez discussed the meaning behind the opening track in an interview for Beats 1 Radio, conducted by Zane Lowe. “[Rare] actually is a word that sums up what the purpose of my position is, which is letting people know that they are completely unique within who they are. That’s the biggest thing, right? It’s like, they don’t fit in, or they feel like they need to be a certain way… it’s very scary to know who they’re looking up to. I think it was such a perfect description of how i think girls, or women, are meant to feel. It’s even acknowledging: I don’t have it all, but I do know that I’m worth something. I’m not gonna settle and I’m gonna wait, ‘cause there is something out there that is gonna give me that feeling that i deserve and I want.”
The music video for “Rare” was released on the same day as the album – 10th January 2020. It features Gomez in a dream-like forest, bedroom and pool, with colourful lights and disco reflections, singing along to “Rare”. Since its upload on YouTube, the video has over 16.7 million views and 1.3 million likes in only three days.
