STORY OF SONG
“This song is about a girl’s perspective looking at my life; she’s not going to put up with my shit anymore.” according to co-writer Andrew Watt.
‘It Ain’t Me’ is based on personal experiences of Gomez and co-writer Ali Tamposi. The lyrics were written by Andrew Watt, Brian Lee and Ali Tamposi. Kygo’s manager Myles Shear contacted Andrew Watt for a session with the DJ, during that session Brian Lee and Tamposi were there too. During the session, they were trying to salvage the track because initially they found it very poor. Kygo and Shear then left the session, and Tamposi suggested to Watt and Lee to play guitar and ‘Fleetwood Mac it’, spawning a 45-minute jam session as well as the demo of “It Ain’t Me”, a simple acoustic guitar recording with Tamposi on vocals.
After that Watt, Lee and Tamposi asked Kygo to return to the studio to hear the second version of the song, Tamposi said: “When they pushed the space bar to play the song, Kygo went from this very sweet, polite, charming young man to this super human producer guy. I was watching his eyes go back, left and right, just mapping out how he envisioned the production of the song. He was extremely excited”.
Kygo and Watt then started working on the production where they followed the melodies and message of the demo bringing the song to life according to Tamposi.
In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Tamposi said: “I feel the most proud of this song, If every song was that easy, I think I would be in less shock, but I’m in shock because it came together so perfectly. I can’t imagine it being different in any way.”
Selena Gomez heard ‘It Ain’t Me’ a month after it was finished; she recorded it a few days later. Tamposi and Gomez shared a similar emotional vision for the song based on their own personal experiences.
