“Casual” is the fifth track on Chappell Roan’s debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”, which was released in September 2023, but as a single in October 2022.
“Casual” is a slow rock love ballad about a situationship between Roan and an individual who is unable to commit but acts as if they are in love and in a relationship with Roan. This leaves her feeling angry, confused and rocky on where she stands with her lover and their actions.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Roan explained where the song’s inspiration came from, revealing it stemmed from what began as an online relationship. In the pandemic, Roan began a long-distance and virtual relationship with someone, where they were calling Roan their “dream girl”. When they finally met in person, Roan thought the pair were set up to be together until they texted her to say that they had met someone else only a week later:
“I was pretty devastated […]. I was talking to a friend that was with them the day that they ended things with me, and they had told my friend it was nothing and was just casual. And in my head I was like, ‘What the fuck do you mean it was casual? We were telling secrets and talking literally every day!’”
The music video for “Casual” was released on the 9th March 2023 and was directed by Hadley Hillel.
