“Good Luck, Babe!” is the hit synth-pop single from American singer-songwriter Chappell Roan, that was released on the 5th April 2024 through Island Records.
The synth-pop track sees Roan reflect on a past relationship with a woman who was in denial about her sexuality. Roan speaks about her ex’s struggle with compulsory heterosexuality that lead to the end of their relationship, with Roan emphasising that one day her ex will eventually come to terms with her sexual identity when it’s too late.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Chappell Roan explained why she wrote the queer pop track:
“I was just wanting to write a big anthemic pop song. The song was a bitch to write.
I knew exactly what I wanted. I wrote it in three minutes. I felt so much anger. I was so upset. It all came out and I didn’t add anything when I wrote it all done. It was a perfect storm.”
Some have described the song as the ultimate “lesbian anthem”, with other people in the LGBTQ+ community feeling as if the track could be deemed as bi-phobic, insinuating that the ex in the track couldn’t be attracted to both men and women. However, it is quite clear that the song is about compulsory heterosexuality.
The lyric video was uploaded to YouTube on the 5th April 2024.
“Good Luck, Babe!” is certified Gold in both Canada and the US.
