“There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” is one of Canadian musician and singer Shawn Mendes’ most well-known and successful tracks. It is the opening track from Mendes’ 2017 album, “Illuminate”, and was written by Mendes, Teddy Geiger, Geoff Warburton and Scott Harris, with production done by Geiger and Andrew Maury.
“There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” is a pop ballad about a manipulative and unclear relationship Mendes has with a woman, and ho he simply accepts her behaviour as he is very interested in her. In a Q&A session with Mendes’ fans at one of his live tours, Mendes discussed what the track was inspired by: “I was reading a movie script that I was possibly going to be in and the girl who ‘my character’ kind of falls in love with, I actually really loved, like I really liked the character. I wrote the song about her. So it’s not a real girl, that one isn’t a real girl.”
The music video for “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” was released on YouTube on the 20th June 2017, and was directed by Jay Martin. The video features footage of Mendes and a love interest (played by actress Ellie Bamber) exploring Paris, Amsterdam and the UK while Mendes is on tour. As of April 2020, the video has 879.8 million views, with well over 6 million likes.
