It’s basically asking the girl you love who’s already in a relationship to be with you because you can treat her better. In an interview on the Elvis Duran Show Shawn talked the song, he said: “it’s more like, this guy is mean and i can treat you better.” Mendes then added: “The way that i actually viewed it when i was writing is that.. i have like a million girl cousins and 1 guy cousin so i have been very lucky. I’m very comfortable around girls and i have some really close friends who are girls who would tell me about their guy problems. So i kind of flipped it a little bit, if there was a thing between me and a girl, and i knew that they guy treated her really bad i’ll be like ‘Stop coming to me about the problems! why don’t you just break up with him and be with me because then you won’t have problems’ does that make sense?” it’s a little bit selfish in a way but sometimes love is selfish. I’m just saying that sometimes if you’re not a selfish person at all there’s things in the world like love that will overpower your personality completely and make you selfish.” This song was penned with Scott Harris and Teddy Geiger, in an interview with Songwriter Universe, Harris said: “I remember we wrote it in LA. Teddy had worked with Shawn before and Shawn was excited to get the three of us together. I’ve known Teddy for a while. My band actually opened up for him for six weeks one time. The vibe was immediately right. We all get along really well and it kind of came right out. It was actually a full-on reggae song until we switched the guitar part right before we recorded the demo.”
