Shawn Mendes

Album Wonder

“Monster” is the ninth track from Canadian singer Shawn Mendes and his fourth studio album “Wonder”. The track features famous musician and singer and fellow Canadian Justin Bieber. The slow pop song was written by Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber, Ashton Simmonds, Adam King Feeney and Mustafa Ahmed, with production done by Frank Dukes. “Monster” marks the singers first piece of work together.

Rumours about Mendes and Bieber collaborating started circulating in July 2020, when Bieber’s manager posted a video of Bieber, Mendes and Tori Kelly jamming on a piano. During an interview in October 2020 on UK radio show Capital, interviewer Roman Kemp asked Mendes if he turned down the opportunity to work with Bieber, to which Mendes responded: “Is this you trying to get me to confirm that I have a collaboration with Justin Bieber? I didn’t last month.” Mendes also stated how it would have been crazy of him to turn down working with Bieber, since he had been listening to him since he was nine years old. In an Apple Music interview, Mendes revealed the true meaning behind the song: “ [its] about how society can put celebrities up on a pedestal and watch them fall”. Mendes also stated how the song was one of his favourites that he had ever written.

The music video for “Monster” was released via Mendes’ YouTube channel on the 20th November 2020. Directed by Colin Tiley, the video is shot in a single take and follows Mendes and Bieber while they walk through woods onto a large cube with stairs, towering above the ground, where they remain throughout the song as lightning flashes. In only 4 days, the video has gathered 28.8 million views and over 2.1 million likes.
