VULGAR

“VULGAR” is the 2023 single from singers Sam Smith and Madonna, and marks the artists first collaboration together. Released on the 9th June 2023 through Capitol Records, the song was first teased on the 31st May 2023 via social media, with the tag “S X M”.

The ballroom inspired song features Middle Eastern influenced strings combined with electronic elements, and takes it name from British interviewer and TV personality Piers Morgan describing Smith’s performances of their new music as “disgusting and vulgar”. 

Lyrically, the track sees Smith be defiant and confident about their identity and sexuality, with Madonna defying the conventions of older women and reaming young forever, while also solidifying her loyalty for Smith.

Madonna and Smith recorded “VULGAR” one day after the 65th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2023, where Smith and Kim Petras’ controversial track “Unholy” had won a Grammy Award for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance”.

The official audio visualiser for “VULGAR” was uploaded on the 9th June 2023 via Smith’s official YouTube channel. In 10 days, the visualiser had received over 782 thousand views.
