“Truth Hurts” from American rapper and singer Lizzo (real name Melissa Jefferson) is one of the artist’s most well-known songs. Written by Lizzo along with Eric Jefferson, Jesse Saint John and Seven Cheung, the track is a tale about self-love and boy problems.

“Truth Hurts” is the thirteenth track from Lizzo’s third studio album “Cuz I Love You”, which was released earlier in 2019. The track was also Lizzo dissing a former lover (who she revealed was about someone in Detroit (her hometown) while performing), stating that “’You coulda had a bad bitch, non-committal/ Help you with your career, just a little’, as well as: ‘You’re ‘posed to hold me down/ But you’re holding me back/ And that’s the sound of me not calling you back’.

The music video was directed by Lizzo’s creative director Quinn Wilson, who is in charge of all creative aspects of Lizzo’s music. Released on YouTube on the 25th September 2017. It features Lizzo at a wedding, before leaving her groom at the altar and marrying herself, ending with a dance party. As of September 2019, the video has almost 100 million views and over 1.3 million likes.

After its appearance in the film, the track reached #50 in the Billboard Top 100 in May 2019, but currently ranks #1 as of September 2019. The track has also reached many charts globally: #18 in Australia, #2, #9, #30 and #32 in Belgium charts, #8, #11 and #47 in Canada, #24 in China, #65 in the Czech Republic, #167 in France, #13 in Ireland, #78 in the Netherlands, #5 in New Zealand, #35 in Scotland, #38 in Slovakia, #2 in Sweden,#94 in Switzerland, and lastly, #3 and #21in British charts. “Truth Hurts” has double Platinum certification in Canada and the US, Platinum in New Zealand and Australia and Silver in the UK.
