“Boys” was the twelfth track from American singer and rapper Lizzo’s (Melissa Jefferson) deluxe version of her third studio album “Cuz I Love You”, which was released through Atlantic Records on the 19th April 2019.
Written by Lizzo, Nate Mercereau, Aaron Puckett and Ricky Reed, with Reed also producing the track – “Boys” is a funk-pop anthem where Lizzo declares her love for all boys and men and that she doesn’t have a particular type. In an interview with Out.com in 2018, Lizzo explained the meaning of “Boys” for her: “From this black girl to the world, I want you to identify with my story no matter what you like in yo’ holes,” she explains with the casually vulgar flourish we’ve come to expect from the Minneapolis rapper. “I want people to feel free, I want people to have fun, I want these boys to know that you could be my next victim… if you play your cards right.”
The music video for the track was released alongside the audio, on the 22nd June 2018. Directed by Lizzo’s creative director Quinn Wilson, the video features Lizzo dancing in front of the Minneapolis music note wall, dancing in a men’s bathroom and lying on rose petals, while several boys appear throughout the video. As of mid February 2020, the video has 32.3 million views and over 668 thousand likes.
