“Please Please Please” is the second single from American singer-songwriter Sabrina Carpenter’s sixth studio album “Short n’ Sweet”, which will be released in August 2024 through Island Records.
The pop ballad sees Carpenter go through a range of emotions from frustration, adoration and concern. Carpenter is aware that she is loving someone who doesn’t always make the best decisions, but is begging him to protect her pride and their relationship (“heartbreak is one thing / my ego’s another / I beg you don’t embarrass me motherf*cker”). The song is rumoured to be about Carpenter’s boyfriend actor Barry Keoghan, who also stars as her love interest in the music video.
The music video was directed by Bardi Zeinali, and was released via YouTube on the 7th June 2024. The video shows Carpenter having to deal with Keoghan getting arrested over and over again for different crimes, with Carpenter coming to bail him out every time, show a toxic cycle of repetition and habit.
Carpenter spoke to Vogue about the “Please Please Please” music video and its connection to the previous single “Espresso” and its video:
“I ended the last video getting arrested, so naturally I thought it would be satisfying to start the “Please Please Please” video in jail. I liked the idea of falling in love with a convict and being shocked and embarrassed every time he commits crimes. I was sooo lucky to get Barry Keoghan in the video cause he is just magic on screen.”
In only 11 days, the video had over 28 million views.
