“Lift Me Up” is the first release from Barbadian singer and songwriter Rihanna in 6 years. It is the lead single from the soundtrack for the superhero film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. The song was released on the 28th October 2022 via Westbury Road and Roc Nation Records.
The R&B track was composed by infamous composer Ludwig Göransson, who worked on the movie’s score along with Ryan Coogler, as well as popular Nigerian artist Tems writing the song with Rihanna. The song is a tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman, who sadly passed away in 2020 due to colon cancer. Boseman was the protagonist in the original film.
Tems spoke to Variety, stressing the song’s importance for them and the feelings Tems wanted to evoke in listeners:
” […] I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them, Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honour.”
The music video was released on the same day as the track, premiering on Rihanna’s YouTube channel. The video was directed by Autumn Durald Arkapaw and over 25 million views in only 5 days.
