“Kyoto” is the third track from American singer and songwriter Phoebe Bridgers and her second studio album “Punisher”, which was released in 2020. “Kyoto” was written by Bridgers, Morgan Nagler and Marshall Vore, and produced by Bridgers, Ethan Gruska and Tony Berg.
“Kyoto” is an indie rock song that Bridgers wrote regarding her relationship with her father, as well as drawing inspiration from Bridgers’ trip to Kyoto in 2019. Speakign to Pitchfrok.com, Bridgers opened up about the song’s meaning to her:
“This song is about impostor syndrome. About being in Japan for the first time, somewhere I’ve always wanted to go, and playing my music to people who want to hear it, feeling like I’m living someone else’s life. I dissociate when bad things happen to me, but also when good things happen. It can feel like I’m performing what I think I’m supposed to be like.”
The music video for “Kyoto” was released via Bridgers’ YouTube channel on the 9th April 2020. Directed by Nina Ljeti, the video was initially supposed to be filmed in Kyoto, however due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the video had to be filmed in front of a green screen in LA. Bridgers is shown in a skeleton costume, superimposed in front of stock images of Kyoto. Bridgers’ friends also make an appearance in the video. As of late January 2021, the video has almost 2 million views and 51 thousand likes.
