“EARFQUAKE” is the leading single off of American rapper Tyler, The Creator’s (real name Tyler Okonma) latest and highly anticipated 2019 album “IGOR”.
Tyler, The Creator is known for his wacky, wonderful and emotionally challenging music, having worked with many other artists in the past such as A$AP Rocky and Kali Uchis. “EARFQUAKE” features rapper Playboi Carti in the first verse, as well as Charlie Wilson singing the background vocals. Wilson and Tyler have previously worked together on Tyler’s third record “Cherry Bomb”, and Tyler talks about his experience with Wilson on that record in a documentary titled “Cherry Bomb Documentary”: But working with Charlie Wilson? That was a whole ‘nother story. I don’t think I’ve ever been this stressed making a song. Charlie Wilson took what was in my head and made it come to fruition so perfectly, that I started stressing out on the fact that I could never do anything that good.” In terms of “EARFQUAKE”, the track is a love song to a lover that Tyler really depends on, almost in an unhealthy way, begging his lover to stay with him. Tyler also originally wrote the song for Justin Bieber, but he turned it down. Tyler then asked Rihanna to sing the hook of the track, but she also rejected the track.
The music video was released on Tyler’s YouTube channel on the same day the track was released. It features a cameo from actress Tracee Ellis Ross acting as a day-time talk show host where Tyler is dancing and singing EARFQUAKE. Tyler plays the piano while singing the song until his cigarette catches on fire, burning everything around Tyler including himself. However, the video ends when Tyler returns as a firefighter and puts out the fire. Since its release, the video has over 23 million views and almost 1 million likes.
