With the music video being released the same day as the track (8th February 2019), “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored” is the latest single off of Grande’s latest studio album: “thank u, next”.

Written by Ariana Grande, Max Martin, Illya Salmanzadeh (who Grande frequently writes with), Savan Kotecha, Kandi Burruss and Kevin Briggs, “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored” is a track about self-love, despite the title. With lyrics such as “You could call me crazy ’cause I want you / And I never even ever f*ckin’ met you”, followed by the storyline of the music video, it can be assumed that the song is about focusing on yourself and love for you rather than others; Grande is obsessing over a man she hasn’t even met yet rather than focusing on herself. The track interpolates two other songs: “Can I Get A…” by JAY-Z (ft. Amil & Ja Rule) and “It Makes Me III” by boy band *NSYNC.

The music video was directed by Hannah Lux Davis and was released on the 7th February 2019 and has over 51 million views as of the 13th February. Featuring Grande as the protagonist, actor Charles Melton as her lover and Ariel Yasmine as the lover’s girlfriend, the track takes place primarily in a big house party and a lux club. Yasmine is dressed very similar to Grande, and Grande sees them both at a club, and joins in their dancing. She admires the girlfriend’s hair and looks. Later, Grande turns up to a house party put on by the couple with the same hair colour and outfit as the girlfriend. Melton looks shocked as Yasmine looks pleased. The video ends with all three in the pool and then Grande going to kiss the girlfriend.
