It’s about a guy who wasn’t happy with life and then got abducted by aliens or maybe had a dramatic experience that changed his perspective of life. He reminds himself of why he felt the way he did before he got abducted. The key in the chorus is the Starmaker and Dreammaker which are the voices in his head; Starmakers means that his life is not that bad while the dreammaker is the side of him that wants even more And then the spaceman shows up and makes him realize that at the end of the day none of these problems really matter when it could be worse. Lead singer Brandon Flowers explained that in this song he was “looking for a mixture of ‘Space Oddity’ and ‘Rocket Man.'” He told The Sun that he cited this alien-abduction anthem as a typical Killers song: He said: “Yes, it’s very us. It came off the back of ‘Don’t Shoot Me Santa’, our Christmas single, so I was in a playful mood. I think it’s really adventurous for me.” In another interview with NME, he explained the story of this song, he said: “We’re always making demos, and on our way to South America, we had a few days off so we went to the rainforest in Panama. On the plane on the way there, I was humming the verse, and I couldn’t wait to lay it down and we made a demo with Ted (Sablay), our touring musician, in the hotel room in Panama. That demo probably isn’t that different from the final version.”
