This dance club song was penned by production team The Underdogs, who were inspired by Chris Brown’s artistry. In an interview with MTV News, they explained: “The inspiration was really him as an artist, visualizing how he dances and how he performs, and giving him something to match that energy.” Brown’s co-director Godfrey Tabarez elaborated on the inspiration for the music video: “We wanted to make sure that people, when they watch this, they feel like they’re in this video.  We wanted to give it personality, we wanted to make it fun, we wanted everybody to see this and wish they were there.”

In the UK, this song topped the UK Singles Charts and the UK R&B Charts Company. In the US, it peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and made it to number 19 on the US Dance Club Songs. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it Platinum for sales over 1 million copies.  In Australia, ‘Turn Up the Music’ peaked at number 6 and was certified Double Platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association. The song reached the top 10 charts in Japan and New Zealand, and also topped the charts in Scotland. It was certified Double Platinum in Norway, Platinum in Sweden, Gold in New Zealand, and Silver in the UK.
