“The One That Got Away” is the seventh track from American singer-songwriter Katy Perry and her 2010 album, “Teenage Dream”. Written by Perry, Lukasz Gottwald and Max Martin, “The One That Got Away” is one of Perry’s more mature tracks from her past, with the song’s narrative detailing a lost lover.
On the 13th September 2011, Perry confirmed to Billboard that “The One That Got Away” would be the sixth single from “Teenage Dream”, and released a stament from her label, “Capitol”: ““I’m so pleased to select ‘The One That Got Away’ as my sixth single because this song shows a very different side of me that I haven’t shown with my past singles on this record. I think that everyone can relate to this song. I wrote (it) about when you promise someone forever, but you end up not being able to follow through. It’s a bittersweet story. Hopefully, the listener learns from hearing it and never has to say they had ‘The One’ get away.” Years later, when Perry was about to release her album “Witness” in 2017, she revealed who “The One That Got Away” was about in game of “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” with late night host James Corden, in a livestream for the release of the “Witness” album. She eventually reveals it was about American singer, songwriter and actor Josh Groban.
The music video for “The One That Got Away” was released on the 11th November 2011 and was directed by Floria Sigismondi. It features Perry in love with her past boyfriend (played by Diego Luna) , being in love but also fighting. Perry is later shown as a nostalgic elderly woman with grey hair and wrinkles, reflecting on a lost love. As of March 2020, the video has 730.2 million views with 2,6 million likes.
