So Am I

“So Am I” was the follow up single to Ava Max’s 2018 hit “Sweet But Psycho”, which was released in March 2019. The song was written by Max, Charlie Puth, Maria Smith, Victor Thell, Gigi Grombacher, Roland Spreckley and the producer of the song, Cirkut.

“So Am I” is an electropop song that discusses the importance of self-love and not fitting in. In an interview, Max stated what “So Am I” means to her: “About what makes people unique and different from each other. It’s about loving yourself, being different, being an outcast and not fitting in the format that society wants to put us in — just celebrating what really makes you different. Whenever I’m feeling down, I remind myself that my flaws make me perfect, because in reality there is no perfect.” The song stresses how you do not need to fit into society’s mould of what is “perfect”.

The music video for “So Am I” was released on Max’s YouTube channel on the 7th March 2019 and was directed by Isaac Rentz. The video shows Max walking around a high school with a variety of students, while they dance and also attend detention and different classes around school. As of the beginning of October 2020, the video has 158.5 million views and 2.2 million likes.
