PRIMADONNA

“Primadonna” is English/Welsh/Greek singer MARINA’s (formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds) most successful and well known track, as well as being the lead single from her second studio album, “Electra Heart”, which was released in 2012.

In a 2012 interview with Elle Girl, Marina Diamandis spoke about the inspiration behind the track and its meaning: “It’s about not needing anybody when it comes to love—your raison d’être is to live for adoration. Girls usually feel like this when they are not appreciated in a relationship. The inspiration for the song came from an ex-boyfriend. He thought it was funny that I was a mega drama queen always talking “global love” this, “global love” that! He called me a prima donna. I love it but I also kind of hate it. Like they say, “You only hate in others what you hate in yourself”, so I thought I’d channel this well-known but kind of undesirable character type into a pop song. As the saying goes (that I just made up): You’ve either been one or dated one at least once in your life.” “Primadonna” was written by Diamandis, Julie Frost, controversial songwriter and producer Dr. Luke (Lukasz Gottwald) and Henry Walter. It blends the genres of dance, pop, disco and electropop. Within the first few hours, the song was well received and became a worldwide trending topic

The music video was filmed in Copenhagen, and directed by Casper Blaslev. It features MARINA singing on a bed eating grapes, at a piano, as well as having different filters over certain shots; some parts of the video look as if they are being played on an old television. MARINA is also shown prancing around a large mansion, dancing to twirling around in large rooms. MARINA is also shown being surrounded by a large body of water in a car, shot in black and white, The video was uploaded to YouTube in March 2012, and as of November 2019, the video has almost 85 million views and over 700 thousand likes.
