“Man’s World” is the latest release from Welsh singer, songwriter and musician MARINA for her upcoming fifth studio album, the name of which is soon to be released. The song was written and produced by MARINA herself, along with American musician Jennifer Decilveo also co-producing the song. MARINA had previously declared the she had decided to work with only female musicians on her fifth album.
“Man’s World” is an alternative pop song featured piano that discusses the treatment of women and minorities throughout history, with MARINA claiming that she does not “want to live in a man’s world anymore.” Speaking to Vogue last month, MARINA revealed the inspiration behind the important and honest lyrics in the song:
“At the time I was mostly inspired by the shifts that are happening for people who are discriminated against. The original idea for the song was to write a snapshot of how women and LGBTQ+ individuals have been subjugated and discriminated against throughout history going back to the Salem witch trials, where any person who was deemed abnormal or slightly alternative was singled out. Those kinds of patterns are still present in society. That’s something inspiring to me and worth writing about.”
The music video for “Man’s World” was uploaded to MARINA’s YouTube channel on the 18th November 2020, and was directed by Alexandra Gavillet, and was filmed in Simi Valley, California. It features MARINA dancing in colourful outfits, with a group of dancers behind her in similar outfits, dancing along to a choreography in the sun. As of the beginning of December, the video only has 2 million views and over 195 thousand likes.
