When Coldplay were interviewed by MTV News, Chris Martin explained that the meaning of the song is easier to explain in the context of the album ‘Mylo Xyloto’. According to Martin, the album tells a story: “It’s supposed to be about two people who grow up separately in a very big oppressive city, and they each are a bit lost in their lives.” He added that the pair meet in a gang and fall in and out of love before getting back together at the end. Martin said: “Paradise’ is about a girl really, the female half of the album, just about being a bit lost in the world and escaping through fantasy.”

In the US, the single peaked at number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and also topped the Adult Alternative Songs and Alternative Songs. The song also topped the charts in Czech Republic and Norway, while reaching the top 10 charts in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, and Switzerland. It was certified six times Platinum in Australia, Triple Platinum in Canada and Italy, Double Platinum in New Zealand, and Platinum in Denmark and Mexico. In Belgium, France, and Germany, it was certified Gold.
