My Universe

Coldplay

Album Music of the Spheres

My Universe” is the second single from British Coldplay and South Korean boyband BTS. Released on the 24th September 2021, the song was written by Coldplay with BTS’ rapper, but was intentionally only written for BTS. The groups ended up performing it together and found that their voices worked perfectly in unison for the song. Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin recorded his verse when he visited South Korea in April 2021, and the track marks the first collaboration between both groups.

My Universe” sees both groups sing about a difficult love and its trials and tribulations until all is worked out. Chris Martin revealed how the artists came to work together, the song’s meaning, and how the two artists worked together in the process of creating “My Universe“:

BTS were asked in an interview who they’d like to collaborate with, potentially, and a couple of the guys said they’d love to collaborate with us… […] we felt like this would be great because it’s an unusual collaboration between people who are known to come from a different genre and completely different part of the world… It had been in my mind for a while that someone had said BTS were wondering if we’d do a song for them or something like that. And then we started communicating with BTS and then went to Korea… […] anytime there’s actual communication or music between us, it just feels so good. So I unabashedly and unashamedly feel really grateful for the song, grateful for the person that inspired the song, and grateful for the people we sing it with.

It’s a love song…  about love that’s difficult, or it’s forbidden, or you can’t quite get it together, so it felt like really cool to have two bands that, it’s a difficult love story, but it works in the end… […]I unabashedly and unashamedly feel really grateful for the song, grateful for the person that inspired the song, and grateful for the people we sing it with.”

The music video was directed by infamous music director Dave Meyers, and was released via Coldplay’s YouTube channel on the 30th September 2021. The video is set in the album’s alternate universe, where music has been banned by the “Silencers”, and shows Coldplay and BTS and a fictional band Supernova 7 perform the song together. Even though all groups are located on different planets, they are united through holograms, while alien DJ Lafrique shows the groups performing while she navigates space, with the “Silencers” following her. As of late October 2021, the video had over 89.2 million views.
