Now I’m In It

“Now I’m In It” is the fourteenth track from American girl group HAIM and their third studio album “Women in Music Pt. III”, released in 2019. The synth-pop song was written by all members of HAIM (Danielle, Este & Alana Haim), Rostam Batmanglij and Ramesh Srivastava, with production done by Batmanglij, Daniella Haim and Ariel Rechtshaid.

“Now I’m In It” was originally deemed to be a break-up song, but band member Danielle later revealed that it was about experiencing depression. Speaking to Genius.com, HAIM verified some of the lyrics and annotated them with explaining the meaning of either the line or verse. The group’s comments on the chorus is particularly revealing:

“I think it’s just the darkest place you could ever be in. I think it’s just going through it. Yeah, going through it. GTI. GTI, “going through it,” and just being in a really dark place and that’s kind of what being “in it” is and trying to find yourself. I mean, it just, it takes time to kind of get out of this dark place and that’s. And even to find the blueprint of how to get out of that place. Well there is no fucking blueprint. I know, unfortunately. Unfortunately, waiting for someone to create a blueprint, that would be great. I mean it would be great. No one, no one gives us. Therapy. Yeah, therapy is, therapy is definitely a blueprint. Worth it. Love therapy. Love my therapist. Shout out to my therapist. She’s great.”

The music video for “Now I’m In It” was released alongside the song via HAIM’s YouTube channel on the 30th October 2020, and was directed by the groups long-time and frequent collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson. The video shows band member Danielle going about her life of drawing out late drinking, then going straight to work at a diner. She then runs throughout LA, going through a car wash, stealing clothes and eventually emerging from a fog (symbolising the depression). The video ends with the group ending their night at a bar together. As of late January 2021, the video has over 6.1 million views with 74 thousand likes.
