Juice WRLD (real name Jarad Higgins) is a nineteen-year-old American singer, songwriter and rapper. He rose to fame after his track “Lucid Dreams” went viral, dominating the charts across the world.
Juice’s track “Lucid Dreams” takes samples from band Sting’s “Shape Of My Heart”. Using the experience of a “lucid dream” to explain his current mental state after his ex-lover leaves him. A lucid dream is a state of consciousness where a person is aware they are dreaming, and could potentially end up controlling the dream with enough experience. “I still see your shadows in my room/ I can’t take back the love that I gave you”. Often in lucid dreams, people see shadows. “And I cannot change you, so I must replace you”, Juice knows that he can’t change the things he doesn’t like in this person, so he’ll just have to replace them with someone else. The first verse deals with Juice saying that his ex-left him hurting and at their worst point and knows that they want him dead. He takes prescriptions to make him feel okay, as he knows it’s all in his head. “I have these lucid dreams where I can’t move a thing” (this is common in lucid dreams, feeling trapped and unable to move), “thinking of you in my bed”. He now associates his ex with the same feeling he gets when he lucid dreams. He also admits that he should have listened to his friends, because she was “made outta plastic, fake / I was tangled up in your drastic ways / who knew evil girls had the prettiest face”. These lines are particularly important because he comments on how those who are the most evil are also the most attractive. Juice goes on to repeat how this girl made his heart ache, how she was fake and relating back to the idea with a lucid dream.
The music video was released 10 months later, and now has almost 210 million views as of October 2018. The music video is Juice WRLD in a dream-like world from a bathtub, and stairs with a shining light behind him. The whole video is edited in an extremely dreamlike manner, with animations and imaginative graphics, using imagery to depict how Juice is feeling. It is one of the most streamed songs of 2018.
