“LOYALTY.” is the sixth song from critically acclaimed American rapper Kendrick Lamar and his fourth studio album “DAMN.”, which was released on 14th April 2017 via TDE, Aftermath and Interscope.
“LOYALTY.” sees both Kendrick and Rihanna get real about loyalty and honesty and their necessity in order to have thriving relationships – both platonic and romantic.
Speaking to THE FADER magazine, producer Terrace Martin spoke about the beginnings of “LOYALTY.“, the track it samples in the intro and the moment Kendrick Lamar realised Rihanna would be perfect for the song:
“”LOYALTY.” came about because I was working with Rapsody and 9th Wonder… It was a Bruno Mars sample off 24K Magic… I said, “I wanna replay it, reverse it, change the key, add a third harmony — do all these things to it. But still make it sound just like the sample, but with a different edge.”… From there, me, Sounwave, and DJ Dahi got in the studio and started to put drums on that motherfucker. Right there, on my mama, Kendrick said: “Imma get Rihanna on this.” That day. Right when the drums started, he looked at me saying, “Aye, I’m gonna get Rihanna on this record.”
The music video was directed by infamous director Dave Meyers and The Little Homies, and was released via Kendrick Lamar‘s official YouTube channel on the 28th July 2017. The video shows Kenrick Lamar and Rihanna causing havoc in city and trusting each other in dangerous situations such as reckless driving and dangling each other over skyscrapers. As of mid-September 2021, the video has a total of 205.3 million views and almost 2 million likes.
“LOYALTY.” is certified Gold in Brazil, Silver in the U.K., 2x Platinum in the U.S. and 3x Platinum in Canada. The track also went on to win 2 awards, the “Outstanding Duo or Group” at the 2018 NAACP Image Awards as well as winning the Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 2018 Grammy Awards.
