“Just for me” is the 2021 single and the fifth track from English singer-songwriter-producer PinkPantheress and her debut mixtape “to hell with it“, which was released in October 2021.
“Just for me” is a 2-step garage and bedroom pop song, written and produced by British multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ Mura Masa along with PinkPantheress.
Speaking to Apple Music, PinkPantheress reflected on the creative process of the song:
“I made this song with [UK artist and producer] Mura Masa. I was sat with him, just going through references, and he started making the loop [..] but I remember being like, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to be able to write anything good to this,’ and then it just came, after 20 minutes of sitting there wondering what I could do. The line ‘When you wipe your tears, do you wipe them just for me?’ just slipped off the tongue.”
In press releases, PinkPantheress revealed that she was inspired by Eminem’s classic track “Stan“, which is about a fan that stalks Eminem, while also making a song that was upbeat and inspired by British DJ, rapper, record producer and songwriter Craig David. The song sees PinkPantheress lust and long for a lover whom she stalks from her car, has their hair under her pillow and writing their name in her diary. PinkPantheress has stated that this is the successor of her track “Pain“.
The official music video for “Just for me” was co-directed by PinkPantheress with Lauzza, and was released via a YouTube channel named “PP_ROCKSXX”. The video shows PinkPantheress performing to group of young people who all seem sad. The video is in low resolution and occassionaly uses a fisheye lens. Uploaded to the channel in September 2021, the video had a total of 3.2 million views and 201 thousand likes as of late February 2022.
“Just for me” received critical acclaim and praise after its release, and was named the best song of 2021 by The Fader, as well as one of the best songs of 2021 by NPR, Pitchfork and Billboard.
