“Eat Your Young” is the opening track from Irish musician Hozier and his 2023 EP of the same name. Released on the 17th March 2023 through Universal-Island Records & Kobalt Music, the EP featured 3 tracks including “Eat Your Young”, as well as “All Things End” and “Through Me (The Flood)”.
The indie track is one of Hozier’s most upbeat yet, but still with the same incredible lyricism we know and love from Hozier. Lyrically, the song sees Hozier sing about a feast being prepared for the most elite and the means in which have allowed them to indulge in this event, such as “skinning children for a war drum” and “puttin’ food on the table sellin’ bombs and guns”, to which Hozier believes that it would be “quicker and easier to eat your young”.
Hozier has stated that the song was inspired by Dante Aligiheri’s epic poem “Divine Comedy”, as well as it being a taster for the 9 circles of hell, but in this case the 3rd circle – gluttony. The title could also be referring to the 1729 satricial essay by Anglo-Irish author Jonathan Swift titled “A Modest Proposal”. In the essay, Swift suggests that the poor should sell their children to the rich to be cannibalised as a solution to Ireland’s poverty at the time.
The lyric video was uploaded to Hozier’s official YouTube channel on the 17th March 2023. As of the 30th March 2023, the video had a total of 2.2 million views.
