“Bussdown” is one of the tracks from British singer-songwriter Jorja Smith and her third EP “Be Right Back”. “Be Right Back” explores the intricacies of womanhood, relationships and self-awareness. “Bussdown” was written by Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman, Kal Banx, Shaybo and Jorja Smith, with production done by Riccardo Damina, Gitelman and Banx.
“Bussdown” explores themes of financial empowerment, womanhood and growth as an individual, with a confident chorus that emphasises the level of confidence in Smith as a singer. In Shaybo’s verse, she explores the concept of true friendships and trust, especially when being in the public eye.
The music video for “Bussdown” was released on the 14 May 2021 and was directed by Fenn O’Meally. The video shows Smith and Shaybo as mechanics, but then dancing and drinking in the evening in the garage. O’Meally spoke to I-D Magazine before the release of the video and revealed its inspiration:
“As soon as Jorja sent over the track, I knew there had to be a special concept for it. I remember the exact moment I thought about the two of them being mechanics. I’m not sure why — maybe I’ve been mansplained to too many times — but it’s just very epic to see two very beautiful and powerful women completely boss a male-dominated world. I’m so grateful to both Jorja and Shaybo for trusting a crazy concept and making it their own.”
In a little over a week, the video has received over 1.8 million views and over 61 thousand views.
