Boyfriend” is the latest single from British-Swedish singer and songwriter Mabel and her upcoming second studio album. Written by Camille Purcell, Mabel McVey, Marlena Shaw, Richard Evans, Robert Miller and Steve Mac; with Mac also producing the song.
“Boyfriend” is an empowering pop track about Mabel wanting a boyfriend, but emphasizing that she can want a boyfriend without needing one: “Even though a man ain’t something I need.” In a Twitter statement about the track, Mabel explained why she wrote the song: “Wrote this song with the dream team @KamilleXX and @SteveMacProd to remind u all that wanting someone in your life doesn’t mean u can’t still be dat bitchh.” Musically, the song interpolates tracks “Remember Me”, released by Blue Boy in 1997, which in turn samples “Woman of the Ghetto”, which was released in 1969 by Marlena Shaw.
The music video was released on the same day as the track and was directed by Isaac Rentz. The video is essentially a gender-reverse flip of the 1985 film “Weird Science”, according to uDiscovermusic.com, as well as Mabel publicly stating that the video for “Boyfriend” by the iconic late American singer Aaliyah. In the video, Mabel is shown making her ideal boyfriend in an underground bunker, borrowing fashion styles from the 90’s. As of March 2020, the video has 8.2 million views with 184 thousand likes.
