“abcdefu” is the 2021 the fifth single from newcomer GAYLE, a 17-year-old American singer and songwriter GAYLE. The pop-rock / punk track became a trend on video platform TikTok, where users used the video to mock their ex-partners.
GAYLE spoke to Tongue Tied Magazine about the song in September 2021, revealing the inspiration behind the honest and angsty track:
” […] after the breakup, I was trying really really hard to be a nice person. Like overcompensating for it. Lie the week after we broke up I called him and was like ‘hey bud!’ and ‘what’s up my friend?!”.
GAYLE also told The Honey Pop that her way of dealing with the breakup by approaching it as if nothing was wrong, did not ultimately work for her:
“[…] [it] came from a place of trying so hard to be the nice, respectful ex-girlfriend, to the point where it was negatively affecting me”.
In only a few months after its release, the song had surpassed over 100 million streams, with GAYLE also re-releasing the song in various styles, such as “abcdefu (angrier)“, “abcdefu (nicer)” and “abcdefu (chill)“.
The music video for “abcdefu” was released on the 13th August 2021 via GAYLE’s official YouTube channel. GAYLE co-directed the video with director Jimmy Fisco, showing her and her friends having a cake fight and breaking into GAYLE’s ex partner’s house while they film one another on a old camcorder. As of late December 2021, the video had 34.5 million views and 1.2 million likes.
