A Night to Remember

Album Friends

“A Night to Remember” was the second single from American disco group Shalamar (members are Howard Hewett, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel), and their sixth studio album “Friends” which was released in in 1982. “A Night to Remember” was written by Nidra Beard from American band Dynasty, as well as Dana Meyers and Charmaine Sylvers from The Sylvers. The song is also associated with the introduction of the moonwalk dance by Shalamar member Jeffrey Daniel, when the group performed the track live on UK music show “Top of the Pops” in 1982.

“A Night to Remember” is a post-disco track about a love that is genuine and feels true: “When you love someone / It’s natural / Not demanding / And that’s one thing I’m proud to say I found in you”. The track is all about letting down your emotional guard because you are finally with the correct person, and want to have a good time with them, and show them a “night to remember”.

The music video for the track was released in 1982 and uploaded to label SOLAR RECORDS’ YouTube channel in October 2014. The video consisrs of all three members in a bar playing different roles, from Watley on a date and Daniel and Hewett playing as a bartender and Watley’s potential lover, showing the trio at a bar, having a candlelit dinner – eventually all sitting down to eat together. As of late May 2020, the video has 7.5 million views and 58 thousand likes.
