Story of Song
In an interview with Alan Carr (Chatty Man) in London, Alan told Demi that there’s a hidden message behind “Cool for the Summer” and that it talks about lesbianism! Demi replied:”I am not confirming, and I’m definitely not denying, all of my songs are based off of personal experiences… I don’t think there’s anything wrong with experimentation at all”. Alan, who is gay, then joked about it and said, “The trouble is I experimented once and it stuck”, Demi laughed and said:”I didn’t say it didn’t stick either”. In all interviews Demi kept it open for her fans to decide what the song is about, which could be about a forbidden love or even just a summer fling with a girl. In another interview on BBC Radio, Demi said:”it’s not so much about who it’s about maybe the question is what is it about and I kind of let my fans decide that”.
The singer and actress played Angela on Barney and Friends in seasons 7& 8, and explained that she had spent so long just kind of people-pleasing, making everybody happy by being the best role model she can be. Demi then wanted to show the world her other side and introduce the adult version of her. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest Lovato said “At the end of the day, yes, I am outspoken about the things I believe in mental health advocacy work, I have a charity, I have these things that make me a role model, but at the same time, none of these things are really representing the badass that I am.”
