Who is Jo Hill? You may have seen her music floating around TikTok, or recommended to you via Spotify. Well, the answer to your question is: she’s your new favourite artist.
Jo Hill is a British singer-songwriter with the ability to suck you into her songs in an instant. Her raw lyrics, simple yet impactful melodies and buttery smooth voice are phenomenal. Releasing music since 2022, her first single “HONEYMOON” (which is still her most streamed song to date with over 3 million plays), is reminiscent of the earlier sounds of BENEE (think songs like “BLUE”), and has solidified Hill as a firm talent in an ever-changing industry.
Her latest album “girlhood. (u got this babe)” is what could only be described as womanhood in melodic form. The album’s themes range from friendship, femininity and its expectations (as well as breaking them) and as the title would suggest, girlhood.
The album is unlike anything that is out there right now. Hill’s ability to condense yet accurately portray the depth of an experience as complex and layered as girlhood is genius; it is the gift that keeps on giving. Songs such as “JUST AS STRONG” with Palestinian singer Lana Lubany (whom we had the pleasure of interviewing over three years ago), “BIG BOYS CRY TOO” and “WHERE DID ELLA GO?” are fundamental listening. The album is a summation of an experience that is so hard to describe, so difficult to encapsulate and so tough to explain – yet Hill does it so very well.
So next time you come across Jo Hill online, give her a follow. Save her songs. Share her music. She is a rising star – one that has been given far too little space to shine. Let her shine as brightly as she deserves.
(Some honourable track mentions include “COMING HOME 2 U”, “HOLD”, “ZOOM OUT” and “ALL MY GIRLS ARE TOMBOYS”.)
