A Different Corner

George Michael

Album Music from the Edge of Heaven

It’s Michael’s first solo release in the US and second in the UK. He was the first solo artist in the history of the UK chart to reach number 1 with his first two releases. In an interview with BBC One Radio before George’s concert at The Palais Garnier in 2014, he talked when he wrote ‘A Different Corner’ he said: “I think you can tell that ‘A Different Corner’ is genuinely the sound of a man who’s heart’s been broken. I was 19 and the best critique I ever heard of that song was from a friend of mine who said, ‘It’s beautiful, pathetic, but beautiful.'” ‘A Different Corner’ is a strong, reflective, mature ballad, which is different from the poppy sounds of Wham! When this song was released in April 1986, Michael and Andrew Ridgeley were still together in Wham! But after a few months they decided to split up and announced it during an emotional farewell concert at Wembley Stadium in London, in front of 72,000 fans.

Interestingly enough George spoke about the creation of this song in an interview with Gay Times in July 2007

“‘A Different Corner’ also seemed to be about a specific situation, you splitting up with someone…
Oh yeah! It was actually my first true infatuation – it involved no proper sex, nothing. Think about how self-obsessed first love is. It was me going, “I’m ready to feel this now”. The other person is almost incidental – they’re the victim, really. I obsessed about this person for ages, and soon after I met him he said; “I don’t want to be your boyfriend”. Which was a very clever thing to say at the time.”

While we will probably never know who it was written about, we can assume it was a male infatuation…
