“You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)” is the first ever single released by the iconic late American musician and singer Meat Loaf from his debut (and most popular) album “Bat Out of Hell“.
As with most Meat Loaf tracks, the song is a rock ballad written by Jim Steinman and produced by Todd Rundgren. The song begins with a spoken word introduction featuring Steinman and actress Marcia McClain:
Boy: On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
Girl: Will he offer me his mouth?
Boy: Yes.
Girl: Will he offer me his teeth?
Boy: Yes.
Girl: Will he offer me his jaws?
Boy: Yes.
Girl: Will he offer me his hunger?
Boy: Yes.
Girl: Again, will he offer me his hunger?
Boy: Yes!
Girl: And will he starve without me?
Boy: Yes!
Girl: And does he love me?
Boy: Yes.
Girl: Yes.
Boy: On a hot summer night, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
Girl: Yes.
Boy: I bet you say that to all the boys.
The song is a love ballad about lust and desire, intertwined with themes of horror, moonlight and sexual desire – common themes in Meat Loaf’s songs. According to Jim Steinman’s autobiography, Meat Loaf had asked him to write a song that was not long in length, and a “pop song”.
The music video for the song was uploaded to the official Meat Loaf channel in March 2013, and shows Meat Loaf performing the song on a set as if it were a live performance. As of late February 2022, the video had received a total of 26.5 million views and 114 thousand likes.
“You Took The Words Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)” is certified Silver in the UK and Platinum in Australia.
