“Unhealthy” is the third single from British singer-songwriter Anne-Marie and her third studio album of the same name. The track was released on the 18th May 2023 through A Major Tom and Asylum Records, and features country pop icon Shania Twain. “Unhealthy” marks Anne-Marie and Twain’s first collaboration together.
The country pop song sees Anne-Marie and Twain compare a unhealthy and toxic relationship to that of the highs of drugs, and the inability to leave such a bad situation as the highs feel so good. In May 2023, Anne-Marie went onto Hits Radio to explain her inspiration for the song’s title:
“”For some reason, sometimes I get something stuck in my head and I can’t get it out, and with this one, I went into the studio and all I could see was a picture of myself just eating a burger, and all the juice just dripping down my chin. And like all the unhealthy stuff you can possibly imagine, pasta, pizza, everything! All the best things and just the title ‘Unhealthy’.”
The collaboration between the two artists began when Anne-Marie approached Twain via Instagram direct message, where she proposed a collaboration. By March 2023, the singers had record “Unhealthy” in London.
The lyric video for “Unhealthy” was uploaded to Anne-Marie’s YouTube channel on the 20th May 2023. In one month, the lyric video had a total of 92 thousand views and 10 million global streams on Spotify.
