“Under Your Scars” is the first ever ballad from heavy metal group Godsmack and their 2018 album “When Legends Rise”. The band was formed in 1995 in Massachusetts in the United States, and consisted of founder, frontman and songwriter and Sully
Erna; guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill and drummer Shannon Larkin.
“Under Your Scars” came from frontman Sully Erna wanting to take a new direction in the band’s next album. According to metalinjection.net, Erna had expressed his desire to change how the band had been placed into the heavy metal genre, and had decided to try out a more hard rock sound. In a 2018 interview with loudersound.com, Erna described the “When Legends Rise” album: “It was just about evolving as a songwriter. I wanted to stretch my wings even further, to use all of the experiences I’ve had writing different types of music over the years and apply that to finding a way to introduce a newer, fresher, more mature sound, while still maintaining the power of Godsmack.”
The song is a love ballad about how a person’s scars are part of them and are still lovable.
The music video for the track was directed by Paris Visone and was uploaded to Godsmack’s YouTube channel in July 2019. It features the band playing the track live at a concert. As of December 2019, the video has over 17.4 million views and over 150 thousand likes.

This song hits me hard, i kinda tear up and then tell myself to quit cryin like a butch lol.. the intro to the song itself. I have a tattoo on my back, and its my favorite one… it says ” true love is not finding a perfect person, but seeing an imperfect person perfectly” Absolutely love the lyrics, the video with the candles and the woman playing the cello ♡♡ absolutely feel the lyrics and the pain in them… love this♡♡

I have many scars. Inside and out. Some on the outside caused me to die 3 times on the way to the hospital, from the hands of someone who was supposed to love me. This song actually brings peace to me Thank you Godsmack for giving me hope and peace! I hope I get to see you one day. Love all of you!!!

First time I heard this song I was going through a great lose in my life. I had lost a older sister tht I felt like she was a second mom in my life I could tell her things tht I couldn’t tell my Christian parent’s then I lost my precious daddy. But two things keep me going through tht my little boy and his father. His dad came from a different side of the tracks than I did life was rough for him as opposed to my life. But when I meet him it was love at first sight and I was determined to show him regardless of the rough life he had growing up I and my family were going to love his heart right out of him. Our child thought he hung the moon and stars and I did to. Sadly one brief mistake took him back into a world I was sure I’d saved him from along with God of course. And he was murdered. Your song reminds me tht he and I shared everything including our child together thanks for the song GodSmack

In 2010 I went thru a fast divorce because my X went to prison. Your music is amazing. This song hits me hard and allows me to cry and let my feelings out. . I’ve had to be strong for my two girls thru the years, but I’m truly broken from everything but it’s okay to cry. It’s healthy and feels good. Thank you for that. I hope one day I can see you live. Stay amazing

This is a totally new sound for Godsmack. And Sully bailed it, just like in everyone of Godsmack s songs. I’ve had front center stage tickets 3 different times and with in three days of the concert I have ended up going to prison. But I will see them in person one-day. I haven’t been able to try to see them since 2010 my final release date. But I’m ready to test this theory. Sully and to the entire band thank you all for all the Great music. It hads gotten me thru a total of 15yts inn prison. But I never laid it down. And never will. I still have the original Godsmack CD with Voodoo. And everything up until Under my scar’s. If you only need how my life has been changed by the music. Blessed Be
