‘Swalla’ means swallow. In an interview with Billboard Magazine, Derulo spoke about the collaboration with Minaj and Ty Dolla, he said: “It’s one that kind of made sense. I never believe in forcing a collaboration. You know, I’m a fan of both of theirs and I thought that they fit the track perfectly. It’s one of those ones that’ll get you up and doing your thing. I feel like it’s gonna stick out on the radio. There’s nothing that sounds like it.”
Some fans believe that Minaj’s verse was directed to rapper Remy Ra. Both rappers have been dissing each other since 2007. While speaking to People Magazine Derulo said: “You know what, I didn’t even know that it was a beef, to be honest. Nobody at the label knew that she was dissing anybody on the song or any of that. I still don’t know that it’s a diss towards anybody. It actually happened a long time ago, man. I think the whole thing came together and the song was done, that was probably five months ago.”
