“Simmer” is the third track from English singer, songwriter and actress Mahalia and her second album “Love and Compromise”, which was released in September 2019. The track features Nigerian hip-hop artist Burna Boy. “Simmer” was written by Mahalia, Burna Boy, Wayne Hector, Kojey Radical, Jonah Christian, Jeremy Harding and Felix Joseph; with production done by Joseph and Christian.
“Simmer” is the first collaboration between both Mahalia and Bunra Boy, an R&B track detailing a romantic relationship that is going too fast for Mahalia, while Burna Boy thinks differently; with Mahalia using the term “simmer” as a metaphor for her lover to calm down and take the relationship slowly, as they are making it harder for her to stay with them. On a BBC Radio 1 interview on the release of “Simmer”, Mahalia broke down the track and her thoughts on it: “Simmer is my next single and it is, I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s basically just, I don’t know, it’s my summer tune, and it’s my, it’s, it’s definitely my kind of new getting ready song, and it features Burna Boy which is really exciting, so yeah.”
The music video for “Simmer” was released via Mahalia’s YouTube channel on the 17th July 2019. It features both Mahalia and Burna Boy, singing the track in red and yellow lit rooms with electric fans, while Burna Boy sings the track in a green narrow room with a skylight. As of late June 2020, the video has 11 million views and 140 thousand likes.
