“Merry Christmas” is the 2021 Christmas single from British singer Ed Sheeran and British musical icon Elton John. Written and produced by both of the artists, “Merry Christmas” marks Sheeran’s first Christmas track, and John’s second.
“Merry Christmas” was one out of three Christmas songs Sheeran wrote with Sir John, who asked Sheeran to work with him after John’s iconic Christmas song “Step Into Christmas“. Speaking to NPO Radio back in October, Sheeran revealed that Sir Elton John had approached him and asked to create a Christmas track with him back in 2020, with Sheeran also revealing that he wrote the chorus for “Merry Christmas” on that same day. All the proceeds from the song will be donated to Ed Sheeran Suffolk Music Foundation and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
The music video sees Sir John and Sheeran recreating scenes from the famous romantic-Christmas-comedy “Love Actually“, as well as drawing inspiration from classic British Christmas hits from the past and paying homage to them in the music video. These include “Last Christmas“, “Walking in the Air“, “Merry Christmas Everyone” and “Stay Another Day.” Directed by Jason Koenig, the video was uploaded to Sheeran’s official YouTube channel on the 3rd December 2021. In one week, the video had received almost 20 million views.
