Maniac

“Maniac” is American teenage musician Conan Gray’s single from October 2019, and is a track from his latest upcoming album, “Kid Krow”, which is due to be released on the 20th March 2020. “Maniac” was written by Gray and Dan Nigro, with Nigro also producing the song.

“Maniac” is an electro-pop track about about an ex-lover who keeps lying to everyone about their relationship with Gray, claiming Gray won’t leave them alone. In an interview with MTV News, Gray explained the story behind the track in more detail, claiming it was written “after getting a midnight drunk sob text from [his] ex… They’d been running all around town telling everyone that I was some freak who wouldn’t leave them alone when in reality, they were the freak, […] sending strange late-night texts and showing up at my shows unannounced.”

The music video was released alongside the track on Conan Gray’s official YouTube channel on the 25th October 2019. Directed by BRUME, it features actress Jessica Barden from Netflix series: “The End of the F**king World”. Gray and Barden attempt to fight off Barden’s ex-boyfriends, who are all deemed as “maniacs” and have risen from the grave. As of March 2020, the video has almost 10 million views with well over 356 thousand likes.

The track also reached the Spotify charts, reaching #34 in Australia, #53 in Singapore, #87 in Malta and New Zealand, #130 in the US, #138 in Ireland, #148 in Canada, #163 on the worldwide charts and #166 on the Malaysian charts. “Maniac” is also Conan Gray’s highest streamed song, with 85.3 million plus streams around the globe.
