“It Must Have Been Love” is originally a single from Swedish pop duet “Roxette”, but was re-released in 1990 as part of the “Pretty Woman” film soundtrack.
Roxette were originally a Swedish pop duo, consisting of Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle. Per Gessle was the guitarist and vocalist, while Marie Fredriksson was also a vocalist and keyboardist. Sadly, Marie Fredriksson was diagnosed with a brain tumour after fainting in her home in 2002. On the 9th December 2019, Fredriksson sadly passed away at the age of 61, as a result of the previous brain tumour.
“It Must Have Been Love” was originally released in December 1987 as a single from Roxette. Their music began to gain popularity, so Touchstone Pictures approached Roxette and their label (EMI) and asked them to contribute a song to the soundtrack of an upcoming romantic comedy titled: “Pretty Woman”, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. “Pretty Woman” ended up being a huge success, with the film racking up more than $460 million at the worldwide box office. The soundtrack also went on to sell over nine million copies across the globe. The track is about reminicisng on a past relationship that has recently ended and was doomed to end.
The music video for “It Must Have Been Love” was directed by Doug Freel and was shot in a warehouse, and included clips of “Pretty Woman”, while Fredriksson sings and plays the keyboard and Gessle plays the guitar. The video was uploaded to the Roxette’s official YouTube channel in March 2009, and as of December 2019 it has over 438 million views with almost 1.4 million likes.
