“hot girl bummer” is the first single from American rapper blackbear’s (real name Mat Musto) highly anticipated sixth album, “ANONYMOUS”, which is due to be released in 2020.
Written by blackbear and La producer, songwriter and artist FRND (real name Andrew Goldstein), ‘hot girl bummer” takes a spin on the summer 2019 social media trend of “#hotgirlsummer”, which is also the title of a track from Houston tapper Megan Thee Stallion, which had been released previously. It initially received negative reaction due to this, leading to blackbear commenting about the drama on Twitter: “this song is not a parody & has nothing to do with the other song.. it has to do w the caption trend #hotgirlsummer #hotgirlbummer”. blackbear has even teased the track in July 2019, before “Hot Girl Summer” was released. On the 20th August, blackbear visted music publication Genius’ HQ to talk about the inspiration behind “hot girl bummer” and its relation to Stallion’s track. “So I was on Instagram and I don’t know who made it up really, but I just kept seeing, all summer I kept seeing this hot girl summer thing and I was like, “okay, I got it, you know, whatever.” But for me, I’m more an introvert and I wasn’t having a hot girl summer, personally. I was having a hot girl bummer, so I wanted to make a song just for the people that weren’t really out there posing in their bikinis and not really out there so much, you know? And yeah, the day I wrote the song, I just wanted to talk about what I was seeing all year long, all summer long really to be specific. It’s just what I see. So, it’s just a matter of what I’m seeing, what I’m looking at… Meg the Stallion’s song came out a couple of days after I actually recorded the song and I was like, “Oh, sick, this is sick.” I just thought it was cool but a lot of people don’t think it’s cool and I understand. I do understand, but at the same time this song has nothing to do with that movement or anything like that. I just kept seeing captions and I made a song about the captions I was seeing. So she obviously had a huge impact on all of culture, not just rap fans or anything like that because I guess I don’t listen to enough rap because I didn’t know too much about it. And then I’m just hoping she jumps on the song, like maybe she’d get on the remix.”
The music video was released on the 23rd August 2019, and was directed by Gilbert Trejo, but featured creative direction from blackbear himself, as well as Cesar Silva. The music video consists of blackbear surrounded by people at a party while sitting on a white couch, as well as being attached to strings and being moved in a puppet like manner by a man in a suit At the end of the video, . The track is a social commentary about partying and social expectancies from party situations. As of mid-October 2019, the video has over 6.8 million views.
